KidzCrown® was conceived in 2011 when the founder’s 1^st born daughter was 3 years old. She had afro hair that her mother couldn’t maintain. Her mother tried using “step one” to soften her hair but it didn’t work so she maintained her daughter’s hair by doing “amaphondo”. One day her daughter’s daycare teacher who was a white lady allowed the kids in class to play with her hair. When her daughter came back from school, she wanted to have hair that feels and looks like her teacher’s hair. She didn’t understand why she couldn’t run her fingers through her own hair. She was also the only one in class with afro hair, the other kids had relaxed hair. She was so adamant that her mother almost bought her a wig. Just as her mother was frustrated, something said in her “why don’t you raise this child to be proud of the hair that grows from her scalp” Natural products were not easily accessible at that time, this was before the “natural hair movement”. The founder started doing DIY’s.

From a DIY mom who had no background in cosmetic formulation looking for a solution for her child, to creating a small batch and selling/gifting friends, to getting her products perfected by a SABS approved lab.
